Alice Gravedigger Sentenced for Social Security Fraud Johnny Heath Corpus Christi News

ALICE – A man who claimed he couldn’t work because of back problems will serve a year and a half in federal prison for working as a grave digger while collecting disability checks.

Prosecutors say 59-year old Guatemozin Garcia plead guilty to fraud in August for receiving $148,043 in benefits from 2008 to 2013.

The case was handled in federal court as Garcia was receiving funds from the Social Security Administration.

Investigators found he was paid by several people to prepare gravesites and graveside funeral arrangements, but concealed all of that income as required by law. His work included using a tractor and shovel to dig graves, set up and take down of tents and chairs, plus laying out artificial grass for services.

In addition to the prison sentence, Garcia must also pay back all of the money he received from the federal government.

He’s out on bond right now until he voluntarily surrenders to serve his sentence with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

Thieves Smash Windows and Steal Tires off Business Lots Johnny Heath Corpus Christi News

CORPUS CHRISTI – A couple of shops right across the highway from each other were hit by burglars overnight. The thieves got away with tires worth $2,400

The owner of 4 Wheel Specialties on S. Padre Island Drive called police after 3:30am to report someone had smashed the windows or pried the doors open on six vehicles in the parking lot.

CCPD says there is surveillance video of the suspect on the parking lot for more than an hour.

At about the same time, a security guard at Auto Nation Ford reported seeing two vehicles up on blocks and a man in a black sweatshirt running away. The tires off a 2015 Ford Mustang and a 2015 F-150 were stolen. The thieves got away with tires worth $2,400.

No suspects were located near either business.

Man Shot During Fight at Ex-Wife’s House Johnny Heath Corpus Christi News

CORPUS CHRISTI – A man who picked a fight with someone at his ex-wife’s house was shot in the foot early Friday morning according to Corpus Christi Police.

The altercation began sometime around 2 am at a nightclub on Alameda Street, according to a CCPD lieutenant.

Police said that a man in his 20’s left the club, and went to his ex-wife’s house on Promise Lane on the city’s Southside.

That’s when he got into a physical fight with someone inside the home who pulled out a gun and shot the man in the foot.

The man who was shot was taken to the hospital, but is expected to be okay.

Police said they plan to file criminal charges against the man who was shot for initiating the fight.

They said that the man who shot him was acting in self defense.

Wife Accused of Hitting Husband During Argument About Dogs Johnny Heath Corpus Christi News

CORPUS CHRISTI – A 73-year-old woman was arrested early this morning after police say she hit her husband during an argument over a dog.

Police say Mary Sue Wright got upset when her 71-year-old husband refused to water their dogs.

Mrs. Wright really got angry when she tripped and fell while watering the dogs herself, according to police.

Her husband says the next thing he knows, she grabbed an unknown object and smashed him in the face.

Mrs. Wright was arrested for aggravated assault.

Homeowner Robbed While Visiting with 2 Women Johnny Heath Corpus Christi News

CORPUS CHRISTI – A 76-year-old man says he was robbed last night while he had two women over to visit at his home on McAlpin Drive.

While they were inside, two men wearing bandanas and beanies came in through the unlocked front door. The suspects took all of the victim’s jewelry and cash as the forced him into a bathroom.

The victim says he also saw the women going through his things looking for valuables.

All four of the suspects left the home without harming the man. He admitted to police he does not know the names of the women he had over to his home and did not recognize the men who robbed him.

Witnesses told police they saw a beige four door vehicle speeding away from the house.

Waiter Threatened with Knife by Thief Johnny Heath Corpus Christi News

CORPUS CHRISTI – A waiter at restaurant in Annaville told police he tried to stop a man from walking away with cash out of the register Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect reportedly turned to the waiter to say “you want some of this?” He was armed with a knife.

The waiter described the thief as a black male in his 30’s, roughly 6 feet tall and weighing 180 pounds. Police were told more than $100 was taken from the register.

No one was injured as the thief walked away from the restaurant in the 10000 block of Leopard Street.

Men Shot During Argument on Sabinas Street Johnny Heath Corpus Christi News

CORPUS CHRISTI- Corpus Christi police are investigating a shooting that sent two men to the hospital Tuesday evening.

The men were walking along the 3000 block of Sabinas when a suburban pulled up.

Police say there was an argument then several shots were fired from the suburban.

The victims, identified as a man in his 20’s and a man in his 30’s, were hit in the torso.

One suffered two gunshot wounds, the other was hit once.

They were able to drive themselves to the hospital and police say the injuries were not life threatening.

No arrests have been made.

Police are waiting to question the victims for any possible leads on the suspects.

Freer Man Accused of Stabbing Two Women Johnny Heath Corpus Christi News

FREER – An alert tonight from the Freer Police Department is out as they search for a man accused of stabbing two women while they were decorating a home for the holidays.

Fidenco “Fido” Leal III reportedly approached two women on Saturday night at their home.

Both women sustained minor stab wounds to their arms. One woman suffered a stab wound to her abdomen.

They were taken to Spohn Hospital in Alice where they were treated and released.

Freer PD has obtained two felony warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for Leal.

South Africa judge to Respond to Pistorius Appeal Johnny Heath Corpus Christi News

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) – A South African judge says she will respond to the prosecution’s appeal of the Oscar Pistorius verdict on Wednesday.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the Pretoria High Court that the decision to acquit Pistorius of the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, should be overturned. Nel also argued that star-athlete’s punishment was “shockingly inappropriate.”

Pistorius’ defense attorney, Barry Roux, argued against allowing the prosecution to appeal the verdict and sentence.

Judge Thokozile Masipa, who presided over the Pistorius trial, will also decide whether the case can be heard at the Supreme Court of Appeal.
